Magnesite Talc Schist

Field Collector: Esper Signius Larsen Jr.

Place Collected:South of Winchester Elsinore Quadrangle Southern California
Object number: ROC21744
DescriptionMetamorphic rock made up of bands of silivery talc and rust-colored magnesite. The magnesite is seemingly randomly oriented in veins ~3 mm thick. From Mindat on this locality: "Mineralization is a vein magnesite deposit and pegmatite hosted in serpentinite. The deposit occurs in a stockwork of veins in a belt of serpentinite 200 to 400 feet wide intrusive into micaceous gneiss and schist. Associated rocks include schist and gneiss. Local rocks include Mesozoic granitic rocks , unit 2 (Peninsular Ranges) and/or Jurassic marine rocks, unit 4 (Peninsular Ranges and Western Transverse Ranges)." This is probably the result of metasomatic interactions between the pegmatite and the serpentinte.
