Aplite with Cavities

Field Collector: Esper Signius Larsen Jr.

Place Collected:West of Corona, Corona Quadrangle, Southern California
Object number: ROC21689
DescriptionPlutonic, fine-grained (majority of grains ≤ 1 mm) igneous rock that is light pink-tan on a fresh surface and slightly darker on a weathered surface. Consists of ~40% white quartz (few grains up to 3 mm, especially in cavities), 35% light-pink K-feldspar (few grains up to 4 mm), 23% white plagioclase feldspar, and 2 % bronzey-black biotite (up to 3 mm in cavities, smaller in groundmass). There are three roughly circular cavities in this rock (~0.5-1 cm) they contain euhedral quartz crystals and K-feldspar which are associated with larger biotite crystals.
